Over 200 delegates, including operators, freight forwarding and logistic companies, cargo owners, wagon production and repair companies, sea ports, and government were in attendance.
Mikhail Burmistrov, CEO of INFOLine IA-Analytics, opened the conference with a review of the dynamics and structure of mining and smelting cargoes transportation in Russia and abroad. He pointed out the need to attract investment for building new railways as a means to counter the shortage of transporting capacity.
Alexander Golovizin, Analytics and Logistics Director at Morstroytechnology, presented main development trends of specialized coal terminals. According to Mr Golovizin, coal consumption has been gaining momentum. «Russian coal terminals are stretched to their design capacity, reporting a two-fold increase in transhipments,» he said.
Irina Olkhovskaya, First Deputy General Director and Commercial Director of the Port Management Company, then followed up on aligning railway and port infrastructures. She said that ports were competing mostly for RZD carrying capacity rather than for consignors.
Another cluster of issues addressed at the conference centred on efficient solutions for logistics flows optimization. Vyacheslav Stanislavsky, First Deputy General Director at New Forwarding Company, stressed the continued interest in exports to the south. He said that trade restrictions and changes in import and export flows between countries would endanger the cargo transportation sector.
Dmitry Pyatkov, Head of Market Research and Analysis Department at TransLom, spoke about the key trends in the Russian ferrous metals market. He predicted a 1MT increase in scrap consumption by 2022, if new steel production facilities were commissioned.
Conference participants were actively involved in the discussion on optimizing mining and smelting cargoes transport, including coal, to ports in Russian Far East.
Vladimir Sosipatorov, CEO of the first Heavy Haul Company, called on all market participants to begin to revisit their thinking and start a meaningful dialogue on better organisation of coal transportation. The current infrastructure did not support the declared number of wagons. «Wagons need to be universally available on the most transparent conditions,» he said.
Artem Kolosov, Deputy Head of the Traffic Management Directorate at West Siberian Railway, supported the idea of equal and equitable access. Mr Kolosov said that cargo transportation planning procedure had been launched in RZD. He then called on the coal industry executives to have a meeting in West Siberian Railway shortly in order to define the real transport volumes for the immediate future. This should make the situation more transparent.
Sergei Rudenko, Logistics Director at Sibanthracite Logistic, then presented updates on construction of major universal port transhipment complexes along the Far Eastern Railway. «By 2025 we expect to no longer hear ‘schedule’ and ‘restrictions’ when talking about transportation to Far East,» Mr Rudenko told the delighted audience.
Ekaterina Borovikova, Logistics Director at the Moscow office of Kuzbass Fuel Company, pointed out that consignors, traders and cargo owners no longer required carriers to follow a number of parameters and offered instead a set of tools to organise the logistics properly.
The audience took a particular interest in the session on better management of rolling stocks and improved interactions with cargo owners. Shortages of rolling stock and wheels for maintenance, demurrages penalties were discussed among other topics.
Igor Kurotchenko, Head of Capacity Analysis at SUEK, spoke about wagons with 25 tons axial load. «Rolling out a lot of such wagons is likely to drive down revenue rates. SUEK in its consignor capacity favours a stable market,» he said.
The conference participants duly noted the great interest during the discussions that was provoked by hardball questions and were unanimous in assessing the conference as highly relevant.
