Conference: Asphalt concrete mixes and geosynthetics in road constructions

Date: March 12–13, 2019

The international conference «Asphalt concrete mixes and geosynthetics in road constructions» has successfully concluded its work.

The conference was held on March 12-13, 2019 at InterContinental Moscow Tverskaya.

EuroTest — Session partner for «Innovative materials for prevention of coating damages and road pavement technology control»

RCIGS — Content partner

KORRUS-Tech Group, Wirtgen Group, Thrace Group, MACCAFERRI, BAV Company, PSK Geodor — Conference partners

This year the conference addressed the use of both asphalt concrete mixes and geosynthetics in road constructions.

The first day focussed on asphalt concrete mixes.

Discussion during the first session centred on the regulatory controls and their compliance with the road operational requirements. GOST standard 9128 and PNST preliminary national standards 183-184, 2016-2016, 115-2016, 114-2016, 127-2016 made up the core of the discussion.

The session’s speakers included Nikolai Bystrov, chairman of Technical Committee 418 for Public Roads, Konstantin Mogilny, director general of Autodor Engineering, Dmitry Pakharenko, chief industrial engineer at VAD, and Kirill Zhdanov, director general of NII TSK research institute. The session moderator Evgeny Damie, advisor to the director general of ROSDORNII, saw promise in using Superpave on heavily-trafficked roads to extend their time-between-repairs.

Geoffrey Rowe, president of Abatech, shared the US experience of volumetric design technology.

Presentations by Victoria Popova, head of Dortransstroy central laboratory and Andrei Demin, head of the Quality Control Department at Infrastructural Construction Directorate in Saint Petersburg provided an insight into experience of using Superpave in various regions. It was followed up by Olga Vorobyeva, advisor to the Head of Volgo-Vyatskuprpavtodor federal public institution, who pointed out the ease and convenience of this modern integrated engineering system for varying traffic loads and climatic service conditions.

Yulia Urcheva from Gazprom-Bitumen materials, Radii Akhmediyarov from BAV Company and Sergey Inozemtsev from Moscow State University of Civil Engineering (all providers of asphalt self-healing solutions) the overviewed the technologies for prevention of coating damages.

The second day’s key topic was the use of geosynthetics in road constructions. Andrei Petriaev, president of RCIGS (Russia Committee of the International Geosynthetics Society), reviewed its activities in Russia.

The presentations by Evgeniy Fedorenko, vice president of RCIGS, Irina Lonkevich, director general of VNIIGS testing centre, and Svetlana Bogomolova, certification expert of NII TSK, highlighted the key provisions of technical standards base that governs the use of geosynthetics in the design and construction of motor roads.

Pietro Pezzano, expert of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and member of the reinforced asphalt concrete working group at the CEN Technical Committee 189 on Geosynthetics, spoke about the regulatory framework in Europe.

Sergey Iliyn, deputy head of Avtodor engineering department, overviewed the results of the geosynthetics field tests for the reinforcement of road formations and pavements.

Alexey Ignatiev, director of the Institute of Civil and Transport Engineering at Yaroslavl State Technical University, and Sergey Dubina, leading expert of Giprostroymost design institute, made presentations about the innovative materials and techniques for extending the service life of geosynthetic-reinforced pavements.
